Canton. E. Carroll Fossum, 82, passed away Friday, May 19, 2017 at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell, SD. His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Grand Valley Lutheran Church south of Canton. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 to 7:00 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, with family present from 5 to 7:00 p.m.
Carroll was born May 22, 1934 in Canton, SD to Elmo and Cora (Mickelson) Fossum. He attended school in Canton. Following his graduation in 1952, he became employed by the state of South Dakota Livestock Sanitary Board working as a field technician. He married Vivian Gayken November 5, 1956. A month later he was drafted into the US Army. He was stationed at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, where both he and Vivian worked. Following his discharge, they moved to Sioux Falls, SD. Carroll returned to work with the State of South Dakota doing meat inspections as well as livestock disease control duties. They moved to an acreage west of Canton in 1968. Carroll retired in July of 1996 after 41 years of employment with the state. He enjoyed classic cars, golfing, and especially his two grandchildren.
Grateful for having shared his life are his son and his wife, Scott and Sonya of Mitchell, SD, two grandchildren, Christian and Elizabeth, one niece, and several nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 59 years, Vivian, and two brothers, Merlyn and Kenneth.
Deepest sympathies to you and yours, Scott. I have only the fondest memories of our time out in the country. Always so happy to see him when our paths would cross. May peace of mind and lightness of heart be yours again soon.

So very sorry to hear of this loss. Like Mary, I too have only fond and great memories of this wonderful man. He was a great neighbor. I remember going over just to talk to him and listening to Twins games in the garage!
