Lawrence Walter Schoellerman, age 87, died Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Palisade Manor in Garretson, SD. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Fairview, SD. Visitation with family present will be Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home in Canton.
Lawrence was born December 8, 1925 in Sioux County, IA to Sophie and Herman Schoellerman. He was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Valley, IA. He attended country school north of Fairview until 1938 when his parents moved to Fairview. At this time he joined Bethany Lutheran Church.
For 18 years, Lawrence carried the mail back and forth between the post office and the train station. He was the town handyman, raised and lowered the flag at the post office, took care of the water tower, delivered mail, mowed lawns, and shoveled snow for those unable to do so.
He loved trains and anything that concerned the railroads. He knew how many trains went through town each day and the number of cars on each train. He lived in Fairview until moving to Palisade Manor in October of 2011.
Lawrence is survived by 13 nephews, 12 nieces, and a sister-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 5 sisters.

My condolences to all of Lawrence’s family. I have many fond memories of visiting Uncle Lawrence when he lived in that little house in Fairview! I learned the meaning of goodwill from my parents (Gordie & Donna) because they always brought him a box of food when we visited. I remember his walls being covered with ‘train’ pictures and listening to all his ‘train’ stories! My family has enjoyed the Schoellerman Family Reunions in Fairview the past several years too! God Bless.
